Betting Responsibly
Last updated September 8, 2026
This is the page we would most like people to actually read. Everything else on this site is about making sense of numbers; this one is about the part the numbers cannot help with.
Daily MVPs is an information product. We are not a sportsbook, we take no wagers, and we have no financial interest in whether you place one. That makes it straightforward for us to say the following plainly.
Decide the amount before you care about the outcome
The single most effective habit is setting a limit at a moment when nothing is riding on it — before the slate starts, not during it. A figure chosen while losing is not a limit; it is a negotiation.
The standard advice is to stake a small, fixed fraction of a set-aside amount rather than varying by how confident you feel. Confidence is exactly the thing that misleads after a few wins or a few losses, and a flat stake removes it from the decision.
Chasing is the failure mode
Increasing stakes to recover losses is the mechanism behind most serious gambling harm. It feels rational in the moment — the losses are real and recovering them would fix things — and it reliably makes the position worse.
A hit rate cannot help here. No amount of research changes the fact that a larger bet placed to undo a previous one is a worse bet than the same wager placed calmly.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
•
Betting more than you planned to, or more often than you intended.
•
Chasing losses, or betting to recover rather than because you found something.
•
Hiding the extent of it from people close to you.
•
Money for bills or essentials going toward bets.
•
It has stopped being enjoyable but you are still doing it.
Practical tools
Every licensed sportsbook offers deposit limits, time limits, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion. These are underused, and they work best set in advance rather than in a bad moment. Most take effect immediately and cannot be reversed instantly by design, which is the point.
If you would rather not rely on your own judgement in the moment, that is a sound instinct rather than a weakness — it is what the tools exist for.
Where to get help
Help is free, confidential and available 24/7. In the United States, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537), or visit the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org. Many states run their own helplines as well.
You do not need to have reached a crisis to call. Talking to someone about whether a habit is becoming a problem is exactly what the line is for.
Age and eligibility
Sports betting is restricted to adults — 21 and over in most US states, 18 in a few. Availability varies by state and by operator, and it is your responsibility to know the rules where you are.
This site is intended for an adult audience and presents historical statistics for information and entertainment. Nothing on it is advice to place a wager.
